3MT 2024 Competition participants and judges at the conclusion of the competition.
Kuala Lumpur, 8 Aug 2024 – INCEIF University’s School of Graduate and Professional Studies held the Three Minute Thesis competition which saw nine participants from among INCEIF PhD students competing to test their ability to effectively explain their research and its significance to a non-specialist audience in three minutes. INCEIF Deputy President Academic & Dean of SGPS Prof Mansor Ibrahim, in his three-minute remarks, said it was more challenging to deliberate on a subject concisely in a short limited time, compared to having all the time to do so.
The competition featured compelling presentations on topics ranging from Islamic Economics, Islamic Social Finance, and Governance to Fintech, Sustainability, and the Circular Economy. Congratulations to the winners: Top – Randi Swandaru, first runner-up Syafwendi Syafril, and second runner-up Muhammad Raza.
The idea for 3MT was developed in 2008 in Australia. It came about when the state of Queensland faced severe drought which saw many residents using egg timers fixed on the bathroom walls to time their shower time to three minutes to conserve water. The then Dean of the Graduate School at The University of Queensland, Emeritus Professor Alan Lawson, put two and two together and the idea for the 3MT competition was born. The first 3MT competition was held at UQ in 2008 . Today, 3MT competitions are held in over 900 universities across more than 85 countries worldwide.
