Discover the craftsmanship behind Rattan weaving, a testament to the skill and creativity of local artisans. Throughout the year, experience the vibrant festive celebrations that bring Malaysia’s multicultural community to life, including Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, and Deepavali. From traditional crafts to colorful festivals, there’s always something inspiring to experience in Malaysia.

Batik

Batik holds a special place in Malay culture, recognized as one of the oldest forms of craft globally. This art form involves transforming plain white cloth into vibrant patterns using wax-resist dyeing techniques. Common motifs in Malay batik include leaves and flowers, chosen for their natural beauty and symbolic meanings.

In Malaysia, batik has evolved beyond traditional practices and has been embraced as part of the national identity. Local designers have contributed to its transformation into fashionable attire worn by the general population, reflecting Malaysian culture and heritage. This evolution has carved out a unique identity for Malay batik, distinguishing it from traditional Javanese hand-printed batik, despite sharing some common techniques and motifs.

Rattan

Rattan holds a significant place in Malaysian art and handicrafts, valued for its durability and resilience against splintering. This natural material is particularly well-suited for crafting various household items due to its flexibility and strength, making it a popular choice for furniture and decorative pieces.

In Malaysia, craftsmen traditionally use rattan to create a diverse array of items such as rocking chairs, tables, baskets, and other household wares. Its suitability for the hot and humid tropical climate of the region adds to its practical appeal.

Songket

Songket is a revered traditional handicraft of Malaysia, characterized by its handwoven silk or cotton fabric intricately patterned with gold or silver threads. These metallic threads create a shimmering effect, lending a luxurious and elegant touch to the textile.

Hari Raya Aidilfitri

Hari Raya Aidilfitri, celebrated by Malaysian Muslims, marks the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting. It’s a significant occasion, observed over two days with prayers at mosques. Families and friends seek forgiveness from one another, emphasizing reconciliation and renewal of relationships. Many also host “open houses,” inviting neighbours and friends to join in the festivities, characterized by delicious traditional food. This cultural practice fosters community spirit

The Chinese Lunar New Year

The Chinese Lunar New Year is a vibrant and auspicious festival celebrated with bright red colours and lively fireworks. The festivities begin with a reunion dinner on New Year’s Eve, bringing together all family members for a special meal. Traditionally spanning 15 days, the celebration includes visits to temples to seek blessings from the God of Prosperity. A cherished tradition during this time is giving “ang pow,” or red packets containing money, to children by their parents or elders, symbolising good fortune and blessings for the year ahead. These customs underscore the importance of family, unity and prosperity in Chinese culture.

Deepavali

In Malaysia, Hindus celebrate several significant festivals that hold deep cultural and spiritual meaning. Deepavali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is a joyous occasion symbolising the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. Homes are adorned with colourful lights to signify these victories, and intricate “Kolam” rice paintings are created at doorsteps to usher in prosperity and success.

Ruslena Ramli

Masters in Islamic Finance Practice (MIFP)

Director, Islamic Digital Economy (IDE) Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC)

“Substance over form is crucial to becoming a successful speaker or advocator. For a newcomer, the Shariah concepts and structures can be daunting. Hence, having a solid foundation in Islamic Finance has helped me to articulate and break down Shariah contracts, processes and how the structures are deployed in the real world into easy-to-understand language. This has helped to gain market traction for agnostic industry players to consider adopting ethical solutions (i.e. Shariah-based products and services) as part of their business offerings.”

PhD in Islamic Finance (by Coursework and Dissertation)

Managing Director of Stellar Consulting Group

“During my time, we had renowned professors who were thought leaders in their field. This level of rigour resulted in high standards, which we needed to emulate. I am grateful for the nurturing professors who taught the peers who challenged the status quo and me. It took some time to establish myself in a new field, but things soon fell into place, and I found my niche which I am a pioneer.”
